Even though he has played the role before technically and it was heavily expected for him to return, it is now set in stone that Ryan Reynolds will be playing this character in the X-Men universe.

The Hollywood Reporter announced on Thursday that Reynold has closed a deal to headline the Deadpool solo film as the titular character. The actor last played the role in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Reynolds took to Twitter to voice his excitement over the role with a caption that read "it's chimichanga time!"

But with the movie coming out before the next X-Men movie, it would seem that the character could find some life in one of the future installments after that. It wouldn't be incredibly crazy to see him showing up in a post-credit sting to get fans excited and it could be a way for Fox to tease that the character would be teaming up with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in his next standalone movie.

There is a lot of uncertainty riding with this movie as it was demanded by fans for a long time and Fox looks willing to give it a shot. If it becomes a hit, they could be more inclined to add him into the end of X-Men: Apocalypse in order to push for more appearances in the future.

Deadpool is expected to open in theaters on February 16, 2016 with Tim Miller, who worked VFX on the character previously, taking over the director's chair.
