Once Upon a Time creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz recently spoke about what's ahead for the large ensemble of characters in the second half of season 4, including Rumple (Robert Carlyle), Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin), Charming (Josh Dallas) and Emma (Jennifer Morrison).

'Once Upon a Time' Star Lana Parrilla Talks How Maleficent Is Most 'Formidable Foe' Amid Trio Of Villainesses

As with each "half season," there will be some new foes for the residents of Storybrooke to face off against in the latter half of season 4. The Queens of Darkness were introduced in the winter finale on Sunday, Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten), Cruella De Vil (Victoria Smurfit) and Ursula (Merrin Dungey).

Kitsis and Horowitz spoke with Entertainment Weekly after the winter finale and revealed which characters have a surprising connection with the trio of villainesses.

'Once Upon a Time's Emma & Hook Bond Together After Elsa Leaves, 'Bumps' Ahead For Them?

"They're going to have a connection to Snow and Charming," Horowitz said of Maleficent, Cruella and Ursula. "We're also excited to get their origin stories, but one that we're really excited about is episode 14, which is how the Evil Queen [Lana Parrilla] met Maleficent."

The Queens of Darkness kidnapped Belle (Emilie de Ravin) in the Enchanted Forest of the past in winter finale, hoping to offer her up in exchange for a magical gauntlet that reveals the greatest weaknesses in people. While Rumple has been wishy washy on his intentions, he is shown in the present reuniting with Ursula in New York and hoping to get the girls back together.

Ultimately, Rumple just wants his happy ending.

"We're going to see a Rumple who has lost everything, and he absolutely wants to get it back," Kitsis said. "We saw him at the height of his hubris telling Regina he's about to take his happy ending and he doesn't need an author. Then we see him go to Ursula, repeating what Regina said to him. I think he's willing to try new methods this time."

Meanwhile, Emma is dealing with her relationship with Hook (Colin O'Donoghue), who was almost killed by Rumple in the midseason finale.

"I think Emma is understanding that Rumple had his heart. The next chapter for the two of them will be about where does their relationship go from here?" Horowitz said. "And how do the new personal obstacles that we'll see unfold for them in the second half of the season either aid or abet that relationship?"

It's bound to be a busy second half of the season.

Once Upon a Time returns for the second half of season 4 Sunday, March 1 on ABC.
