Ever since '80s music star Rick Springfield revealed that he'd been cast for season 2 of HBO's True Detective, fans have been speculating as to what role the Jessie's Girl singer has taken on.

'True Detective' Is Turning Into A 'True Blood' Reunion

Plenty of stars have joined the popular crime drama this month, but it is Springfield's involvement which has had viewers guessing lately. He is one of the few performers whose role has yet to be identified and since he is an unlikely choice for the series to begin with, fans are eager to determine who he'll play and why.

Springfield announced his own involvement on Wednesday, teasing that he'd be working with actors Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams. Since both Farrell and McAdams are set to play law enforcement officials, Springfield could play a fellow detective or, more likely, a suspect.

'True Detective' Earns 4 Golden Globe Nominations In New Category

On Monday True Detective Rumors began going through the possibilities. The most plausible theories include Springfield playing a has-been rock star or perhaps even the murderer himself.

The fact that the musician has already filmed scenes for the series means he'll be featured early on in the season, though it's uncertain whether his involvement will reach all the way to the season finale.

The story for the crime drama's second season will follow the murder of a California city manager, with a cast led by Vince Vaughn (career criminal Frank Semyon), Farrell (Detective Ray Velcoro), McAdams (Detective Anil Bezzerides) and Taylor Kitsch (Officer Paul Woodrugh).

Creator Nic Pizzolatto is set to pen all of the episodes, with a handful of different directors stepping in throughout the season.

True Detective returns on HBO for a second season mid-2015.
