The future of ABC's Castle is still up in the air, to the extent that even the show's boss is uncertain.

Castle show runner David Amann still doesn't know if the show will continue beyond the current seventh season, with contract negotiations still ahead. Amann spoke with TVLine about the issue, saying that it's actually out of his control, ultimately.

"It's kind of not up to me or [series creator] Andrew [Marlowe] - it's really between the studio and [the actors]," he admitted. "We don't have any control over that process, but internally we hope this all gets resolved sooner rather than later, so we can move forward."

Stars Nathan Fillion (who plays Castle) and Stana Katic (Beckett) need to negotiate their contracts since they are up after season 7. As the show's stars, it would be difficult to imagine a show without them.

Katic previously discussed the end of her contract coming up, telling TVLine that she does not want the show to "overstay its welcome" by extending into season 8.

"If the character is complete, if there is nowhere else to go creatively, then I think it's better to stop when you're on top, because I admire the way that they did that with The Wire, you know?" Katie told TVLine. "Tell a great story and then go home and move onto something else. Don't milk it 'just because.'"

Castle returns for the second half of season 7 Monday, Jan. 12 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
