With all the success he's had this year, and with the recent release of the blockbuster Interstellar, the actor opened up on Sunday about whether his rising fame has altered the way he looks at projects.

"A few years ago I didn't have as many to choose from," he added, "So I did some smaller pictures that actually then emerged and then came out and hung around."

With the popularity of his last few films, as well as his acclaimed performance as Rust Cohle on True Detective, McConaughey continues to look for projects to engage with.

"I'm still just choosing things that turn me on," he insisted. "Things that yeah, I want people to see them. Things that I personally, and foremost, want to have a personal experience to make."

While the star won't be returning to the HBO series for season 2, he did help to set a standard for high caliber performances by movie stars for the crime drama. The praise he and costar Woody Harrelson received during their time on the program likely helped inspire some of the season two performers to vie for roles.

The show's upcoming season is already in production with a cast led by Vince Vaughn (career criminal Frank Semyon), Colin Farrell (Detective Ray Velcoro), Rachel McAdams (Detective Ani Bezzerides), and Tyaylor Kitsch (Officer Paul Woodrugh). Creator Nic Pizzolatto has penned all the episodes, which will follow the murder of a city manager in California.

True Detective will return on HBO for a second season mid-2015.
