Rihanna shed tears in an emotional interview to Oprah Winfrey about her incident with Chris Brown for the season opening episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter."

In the new preview trailer released today, the "Birthday Cake" singer cried while discussing the assaulted that happened in 2009.

"I lost my best friend ... everything I knew switched ... switched in a night and I couldn't control that."

When Winfrey asks her how she felt following the attack, the pop star said "it was a weird, confusing space to be in ... because as angry as I was, as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help ... and who's going to help him?"

"Nobody's going to say he needs help," she added. "Everybody's going to say he's a monster without looking at the source ... and I was more concerned about him."

The interview will be the first time the award-winning singer discusses the highly publicized incident with the R&B singer.

Winfrey told a guest on her former talk show how she felt about Rihanna getting back together with Brown after the highly publicized scandal.

"Let me tell you why she got back with him, in my opinion," Winfrey said. "If you go back with a man who hits you, it is because you don't feel you're worthy of being with a man who won't."

The 56-year-old sat down with the "S&M" singer in her hometown of Barbados.

Winfrey posted a picture on Twitter of her hanging out with her during filming.

"Look who's driving me around Barbados!" Winfrey tweeted.

Winfrey revealed in the first preview trailer that she was shocked at how demure and shy the pop singer is in person.

"I thought she would have been kind of a badass... hard-edged rocker pop woman."

"Nothing could have been farther from the truth," added the television mogul. The billionaire says she found Rihanna to be "thoughtful... very emotional... [and] vulnerable."

Brown pled guilty to a felony for the 2009 beating. He was sentenced to 5 years probation, community service and domestic violence counseling while the pop star was granted an order of protection. After the order was dropped and he completed his legal obligations, Rihanna and Brown recorded "Birthday Cake" together.

According to recent reports, there has been speculation that the pair were hanging out together on a yacht in France last month due to an anonymous exchange on Twitter.

"Oprah's Next Chapter" starring Rihanna airs this Sunday Aug. 19 on OWN.
