Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas unveiled a new hairstyle on Aug. 15 for her guest appearance on "America's Got Talent."

Celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson updated her infamous slick ponytail, that she sported throughout the Olympics, to shoulder-sweeping long-length body waves. The style is favored by A-lIst stars for award shows and red carpet premieres.

When host Nick Cannon introduced the 16-year-old, Douglas received a standing ovation from a cheering audience, MSNBC reported.

Cannon said it was a "honor" to have her on stage and Douglas replied, "I was just so happy representing Team USA and being up on the podium."

When Douglas won her first gold medal two weeks ago, the history-making teenager received overwhelming criticism in the social media over what many considered was unkempt hair.

Natalie Hawkins, Douglas' mother, explained to Fashionista there aren't any Black hair salons in Des Moines, Iowa, where her daughter lives and trained for the London Games.

"We had to work really hard to find a stylist to come and do her hair...It's really been African-American women that have come out and attacked her," Hawkins said. "They don't know about gymnastics. She has to keep her hair in a ponytail 28-30 hours a week."

After the "Got Talent" episode aired, Cannon and one of the show's judges, Sharon Osbourne, expressed their appreciation for having the Virginia-native on the live show.

"It was an honor to be in the presence of greatness when I met Gabby Douglas. @gabrielledoug #AGT," tweeted Osbourne.

Cannon, who is married to the new "American Idol" judge Mariah Carey, posted a picture with the gold medalist on his Instagram.

"Gold medal stuntin' Me and @gabrielledoug," he captioned with the photo.

She shared with her followers on Twitter how happy she was about the new hairstyle

"Ted Gibson Is AWESOME!!! LOVE HIM SOO MUCH!!!" "A special thank you to my Gold Medal Celebrity Hair Stylist!"

Gibson replied to her tweet early Wednesday morning, saying, "It's 3am, just left Ted Gibson NYC. Love you [Gabrielle Douglas]. What an amazing young lady you are. #award winner #gibsongirlsruletheworld."

Gibson owns a hair salon in New York City and has styled the locks of many stars including Angelina Jolie, Demi Moore and Anne Hathaway.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Beast, Gibson couldn't contain his excitement about working with the Olympic champion.

"I'm excited because she's so young and I have a chance for input in the brand of Gabby. There are so many opportunities for someone like her to shine, and I get to be part of that on the ground floor. It's pretty cool," he said.

When asked about the criticism Douglas received, titled "Hairgate" in several media reports during the Olympics, Gibson replied with the following:

"I couldn't believe it and still can't. You have this young girl doing amazing things, and the conversation becomes about her hair? It was ridiculous and shameful. I believe all that talk had to take a toll on her...you've worked so hard for something and then people tear you apart for little or nothing."

Gabby Douglas is set to appear on "Oprah's Next Chapter" on Sunday, Aug. 26.
