Craig Wayne Boyd may have walked away as Season 7's winner on The Voice, but he struggled a lot over the years.

'The Voice's Season 7 Winner Craig Wayne Boyd Will Perform At The Grand Ole Opry In January

Last Wednesday, Yahoo Music's Reality Rocks spoke with the country crooner, in which he revealed he nearly gave up on pursuing a music career, but The Voice audition came just in time to prevent him from giving up completely.

Boyd told the site he initially moved to Nashville to "start over." He went through a "bad divorce" and wanted to chase his dreams and decided to do so in Nashville "where dreams can be made."

He shared that he was a staff writer for the publishing company EMI, in which he wrote "songs for other people," but none of his songs ever made the cut.

"I kept getting close. I had songs on hold with all the big artists of that time, and they wouldn't make their albums. It was like timing never could come together for me," he shared.

He really thought of just throwing in the towel since nothing was clicking into place for him.

"It had gotten to the point where, having my son and having that responsibility, I could not financially afford to go out there on the road and do it anymore. It was getting to the point where something had to give... I remember a little more than a year ago, sitting in a pickup outside of a club after I had played to, basically, no one, and talking with my drummer, saying, 'I may have to quit, because it's not paying my bills. I'm losing my house. I've lost my pickup,'" Boyd said.

"I didn't know what I was going to do... And I remember that email [from The Voice] coming just the day after having that conversation," he stated.

Boyd's coach Blake Shelton even shared with reporters, "There has never been a more deserving person to hold that trophy than Craig Wayne Boyd, as far as paying dues. You know what I mean? This guy has put his time in."
