Hurricane Isaac Path Approaching Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama; Death Toll Reaches 21 [Warning Zones Map]
The National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Isaac will become a Hurricane before it reaches the Northern Coast of the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday.
At 11 a.m. EST, Isaac was located about 310 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River and was moving West Northwestward over the Eastern Gulf of Mexico with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph.
"It is difficult to realize that to the day - seven years after Katrina - another hurricane is headed our way," Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant said, according to Reuters.
In 2005, hurricane Katrina hit the Northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico in New Orleans, killing more than 1,800 people.
Tropical storm Isaac has so far killed at least 21 people. An Haiti official informed Monday that Isaac's death toll jumped to 19. 2 more people were reportedly killed in Dominican Republic.
The National Hurricane Center issued a "hurricane warning" for the Northern Coast of the Gulf of Mexico Monday, from the East of Morgan City, Louisiana to Destin, Florida, including Metropolitan New Orleans, Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas.
The NHC also issued "Hurricane Watch" advisories from Intracoastal City to Morgan City, Louisiana (see Maps below).
The agency said the storm was not expected to strengthen beyond Category 1 Hurricane, the lowest on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
