The show is based on Alice Hoffman's 2011 historical novel of the same name, which became a New York Times bestseller. The book details the true story of 900 Jewish people who the Romans forced to evacuate to Masada in 70 A.D.

Other actors on the show include Rachel Brosnahan, Diego Boneta, Jonas Armstrong and veteran actor Sam Neill as the Romano-Jewish scholar, who is considered a controversial historian. His character will be seen conducting interviews with the adult survivors of the Siege of Masada, an important event in Jewish history.
