Show creator Simon Rich bases Man Seeking Woman on a book of short stories that he penned, The Last Girlfriend on Earth.

The show's premise is noted as "A sweet and absurd look at the surreal life-and-death stakes of dating," on its official Facebook page. It stars Jay Baruchel as the lead male Josh Greenberg as he goes on a quest for love.

HitFix published an interview with Rich on Tuesday discussing the new comedy.

Rich revealed that Man Seeking Woman is his own take on a romantic comedy.

"I mean this is my version of a romantic comedy and it's pretty strange. I'm sort of amazed they're letting us get away with it," he said.

He also shared that even though the show is based on his book of short stories the show holds much more original content.

The pilot that airs tonight focuses on three of the stories from his book.

"We burned through those pretty quickly. I would say that it's mostly original. I don't know the exact proportions but in the book I relied a lot on literary tropes and also just text-based formats that I thought would be fun to play with," Rich shared.

Man Seeking Woman will air starting tonight on FXX at 10:30 p.m. ET. It will run for a season of 10 episodes.
