It doesn't matter how Mad Men ends this spring, the experience will still be "painful" for Jon Hamm.

'Mad Men' Actor Scores New Netflix Series

"Honestly, there's no version of this [show] ending that is not super painful for me," explained the actor to the Daily Mail on Monday during the Television Critics Association press tour. "Mostly it's because of these people and this person [creator Matthew Weiner]."

Hamm, who played Don Draper on the AMC drama for nearly a decade, knows that Mad Men was a unique career and life opportunity. "[It has been] unequivocally wonderful and I'll miss it…" he insisted. "I will be happy when the show airs and not have to fake like I don't know how it ends."

'Mad Men' Plans One Last 'Surprise' For Series Finale

Weiner has been pretty tight-lipped about the series finale, and so it's no surprise that he trusted the secret to Hamm and Hamm alone.

For Weiner though, coming to the end is a lot more difficult than just saying goodbye. As the show's writer and creator, he will receive the most heat from fans if the finale tanks. "I don't want them to walk away angry," he insisted, but no matter what happens Weiner knows that he gave it his all.

"I feel very satisfied with a lot of what we did," he explained. "And I am super proud of the fact that we did not repeat ourselves, which is the tallest order of all of them."

Mad Men returns on AMC for the remainder of its seventh and final season on Sunday, April 5 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
