It looks like there might not be much of a future left for Downton Abbey since it has to end at some point.

Julian Fellowes Dishes On Keeping Things 'Interesting' On 'Downton Abbey'

On Monday, Deadline announced that the British drama may end up going off the air after the sixth season- so that might be some decent news for the fans since the series is only on its fifth season in the United States. Even though an extra season will follow, that might be it from there because series creator Julian Fellowes is reportedly going to work on a new project.

During the Winter Press TV Tour last Friday, NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt announced the new series called The Gilded Age that Fellowes is supposed to be a part of.

'Downton Abbey' Will Come To An End When?

"I think he's at a point now where he's able to start developing and writing our new show,' Greenblatt said. "Hopefully this show will be coming to life sometime in the next season."

So what exactly does this mean for the Downton future? Is Fellowes not going to have any time to focus on that series after the sixth season ends? That seems pretty likely considering that PBS chief Paula Kerger said that they are "not yet going beyond that." Even though a seventh season may not happen, Kerger made it clear that there will indeed be a sixth so fans will have at least one more year to anticipate what happens next for the Crawleys.

Downton Abbey airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on PBS.
