'Grey's Anatomy' Cast Members Reveal Some 'Huge Stuff Coming'

On Wednesday, Entertainment Weekly spoke with Rhimes, and it's been confirmed that Derek really is leaving Grey Sloan Memorial.

What Does 'Grey's Anatomy' Midseason Finale Mean For Derek & Meredith?

During the winter finale, Meredith encouraged Derek to take the position in Washington D.C. after his decision to stay took a toll on their relationship.

"We end the in a fairly dark place," Rhimes told the magazine. "He's walking away and she's sort of pushed him out the door. It's like, you call someone's bluff and push them out the door. He's having a head time and she's having a hard time with this."

Their breakup was juxtaposed to the breakup between Ellis Grey and Richard Webber, and the finale ended with Meredith finally leaving her mother's shadow behind her.

Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that the show will not take place in D.C. and Seattle, which means that Derek will be MIA.

"It's highly possible that we might not see Derek for a while, Rhimes said. While he may be taking a little time away, Rhimes said that he is not gone for good and there will be a time fans will see him again.
