Will 'Once Upon a Time' Creators Change Maleficent's Mythology After Success Of Angelina Jolie Movie?

Once Upon a Time co-creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz spoke to Entertainment Tonight recently about the twist that they are putting on Cruella in the second half of season 4.

"I would say that our twist on Cruella is that she isn't necessarily that crazy woman from that Disney movie," Horowitz revealed. "Our version of Cruella - you'll learn quickly - has origins that trace back to the Enchanted Forest and that there is some power to be had with her."

Kitsis said that there won't be many similarities between their version of Cruella and the one from the Disney movie.

"Cruella will be really nothing like the movie," Kitsis said. "There will be some touchstones in the spirit of her character, but in our world she has powers and she'll be much more than the '50s Cruella in the [movie]."

Cruella de Vil will be joined by Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten) and Ursula (Merrin Dungey) as the trio of iconic villains descend upon Storybrooke in the latter half of the season. Known as the Queens of Darkness, the villains will be discovered to have interesting pasts with many core characters.

Once Upon a Time returns for the second half of season 4 on Sunday, March 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
