Apple's official invitation to its upcoming event has been revealed. It shows the number 12 with a shadow of the number 5 below it. A message accompanying the tech note states, "It's almost here."

Apple is slated to release the iPhone 5 on Sept. 12, although many believe it could potentially be named something different.

Assuming the latest information regarding the unveiling of the iPhone 5 is indeed accurate, the event would wind up being nearly a year after the iPhone 4S had been staged.

According to Reuters, reports claimed that the newest iPhone will possess a 4-inch screen, which is an increase from its previous 3.5-inch models, first debuting in 2007. Analysts said that the display increase is Apple's response to Samsung's larger and competitive Android phones, which have surpassed iPhones in smartphone sales.

Images of the iPhone 5 show a newer 8-pin dock connector that would overtake the previous 30-pin iOS connector. The processor is slated to be upgraded, but there is no guarantee that the front and rear-facing cameras will be.

Mac World stated that the brand new iPhone is expected to be thinner and lighter. It may also feature 4G/LTE connectivity. However, it is not expected to have Near Field Communications, which is a wireless program where users can process payments by swiping their personal phones.

Apple is also rumored to be releasing a new iPad Mini at some point in October following the rollout of the iPhone. There is chatter that the smaller model my have a 7.85-inch screen. The iPod Nano and Touch are also speculated to be receiving improvements.

The iPad Mini will be Apple's attempt at beating out the Kindle. However, Amazon is said to be putting out a 7-inch Kindle Fire early September, Enstarz previously reported.
