12 Monkey's Cassie and Cole exist over a quarter of a century and a veritable world apart, but a burgeoning romance is not entirely out of the question for the doctor and the time traveler.

Thrown into the past courtesy of a fateful recording, Cole's (Aaron Stanford) mission is to save the world and disappear for good, expunging his mysterious sins as he does so. However, his feelings for the woman who predetermined his life could alter the way he views his consistently morphing task.

"One of Cole's goals is to protect Cassie and to save Cassie, who starts out as a stranger, becomes a friend, a comrade, and ultimately, by the end of season one, something much, much more," showrunner Natalie Chaidez teased, according to Entertainment Weekly. "His drive to save this woman that he deeply cares about, maybe the only woman that he's cared about so deeply, is really one of his main drives through season one."

The seeds of romance may start to bloom late in the season, but that won't allow Cole to abandon his task completely, however.

"I'm not completely ruling [a romance] out, with other variables, and they do have chemistry," Amanda Schull (Cassie) told TV Line. "[But] Cole and Cassie don't just fall madly in love by Episode 2 or 3 and decide to screw the end of the world and run off to the Bahamas or something. They have a mission."

Although it sure isn't the Bahamas, the pair will find themselves pursing their mission in a 2014 version of Haiti during "The Cassandra Complex."
