With HBO's recent Imax news, True Detective might just be headed to the big screen.

'True Detective' Season 2 Trailer Rumors

On Friday, Jan. 20 Game of Thrones became to first television series to receive a theatre release. According to Variety, the show opened at over 200 IMAX theatres on Friday and could see $686,000 in sales. The publication also noted that it's success could point to more TV shows receiving limited theatre showings.

So is True Detective next? Will it translate on such a large scale? As one of HBO's must successful programs, it might make sense for the series to follow in the footsteps of Game of Thrones. According to some fans, however, the platforms are far from identical.

Why 'True Detective' Is Good For Colin Farrell's Career

The fan site True Detective News voiced concerns on Sunday as to whether or not True Detective would benefit from a release on the big screen. With subtler plotting and far fewer action sequences than Game of Thrones, the site suggested that True Detective would likely do better with an art house or local theatre showing.

True Detective's signature style means a new location and new cast this year. While season 1 took place in Louisiana, the crime drama's second installment will follow the murder of a city manager in California. The cast includes Vince Vaughn (career criminal Frank Semyon), Colin Farrell (Detecrtive Ray Velcoro), Rachel McAdams (Detective Ani Bezzerides), and Taylor Kitsch (Officer Paul Woodrugh).

Creator Nic Pizzolatto is set to write all of the episodes as he did with season 1, though multiple directors will be stepping in to take over for Emmy winner Cary Fukunaga.

The series has yet to receive a premiere date for 2015, though it is expected to take over True Blood's old summer slot. This means the series will likely begin shortly after Game of Thrones' spring finale.

True Detective will return on HBO for a second season mid-2015.
