One of the most prominent writers on AMC's Better Call Saul recently spoke on the struggle of determining what Saul (Bob Odenkirk) was like six years ago compared to now.

Better Call Saul takes places before any of the events in AMC's Breaking Bad ever happened, and Saul was a very different man back then. Going by the name Jimmy McGill, he makes choices that the eventual Saul Goodman would not.

One of the show's writers, Thomas Schnauz, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the difficulties of writing the Jimmy/Saul character.

"That's the challenge as writers. We absolutely know what Saul would do in this instance, but he's not that guy," Schnauz explained. "Who was his six years ago? And why does Jimmy McGill make one choice and Saul Goodman make another? It's a challenge for us right now, but it's a fun challenge. We are figuring it out as we go along. We don't have all the pieces set in place, but we know what tools we are dealing with so we are working with them."

Schnauz also talked about the flashback structure and how it allows them the freedom to move forward in time or go backwards.

"We are playing with the format. The whole show is a flashback, so we have this free reign to sort of jump further back in time, go way back or flash ahead or jump into the scene that is during the time of Breaking Bad or go to Omaha."

Ultimately, though, they don't just do it for "artsy" purposes; it has to make sense for the story itself.

"We like to play around with that as long as it makes sense and we're not just doing it to be artsy fartsy. Whatever the most interesting way to tell the story is, that's what we're going to try to do," he said.

Better Call Saul airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
