Love 'em or hate 'em, everyone was talking about Speidi (a.k.a. Heidi and Spencer) when MTV's "The Hills" was on the air.

Now that their every move isn't captured by a camera, the couple admitted that their onscreen personas and their fights were just an act.

"I was hell-bent on being the bad-guy character on the show," Spencer, 29, told Us Weekly. "I got caught up in it."

His wife of three years, Heidi, 26, confirmed that their moves were calculated.

"Spencer and I never fight like that. Never," said Heidi, who also recently said " [I] changed my last name to Pratt, so that's the biggest thing in my life."

What are the "villains of reality TV" up to now?

Spencer is completing his political science degree from the University of Southern California. He admitted to making less money, but is happier than ever without the extra cash.

"I'm turning down paid appearances. We don't have celebrity-sized money anymore, but we're fine," he told Us Weekly. "I'm happy to be around normal people these days!"

In August, Heidi told Celebuzz that she and Spencer were living in his father's house in Santa Barbara, Calif., rent-free.

"Who knows where we'd be if it wasn't for Spencer's family?" Montag said. "It's definitely a miracle that we get to live here. We are really cautious with our money now, and we don't have rent. So we fortunately get to save that money. It's just save, save, save."

She claimed reality TV gigs aren't as lucrative as they might seem.

"You make a lot of money, but half goes to taxes and the other half goes to agents, managers, lawyers," Montag told the site. "It sounds like you make a lot of money, but you don't."

But does the infamous couple have any regrets?

"Sometimes, Spencer and I say, 'Gosh, we should have just quit Season 1 or 2 and called it a day,' " Heidi said. "But I'm thankful, and the life experiences were priceless. At least we learned younger."
