Kohan spoke with Essence magazine about the cast of the Netflix comedy-drama and how they continue to surprise her.

"This is a cast full of stars with so much talent. There's so much to watch. I want to see it all, so I keep swinging the camera around like, 'What's going on over there?' It's an embarrassment of riches," she said.

She particularly praised the performances of Uzo Aduba (who plays Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren), Adrienne C. Moore (Black Cindy), Danielle Brooks (Taystee) and Samira Wiley (Poussey).

"There are millions of moments when I've been surprised by what each woman has brought to her role," Kohan said. "For instance, Uzo Aduba brings such a childlike quality to Crazy Eyes, a character who can be so scary. Uzo has found an innocence and a tenderness and vulnerability in Suzanne, the same way Adrienne C. Moore has found humor in Cindy. And I remember the moment when Danielle Brooks, as Taystee, did a spin after she got her new hair. It was so joyful. And Samira Wiley's face just breaks your heart."

Ultimately, Kohan noted that "every show has a destiny," and that the cast has made the entire process "effortless."

As Kohan and company head into season 3, fans are eagerly anticipating what's in store for the prisoners at Litchfield. It remains to be seen if they will be able to maintain the high quality of the first two seasons, but Kohan's confidence suggests that she is happy with the way things are going.

Orange Is the New Black returns for its third season in mid-2015 on Netflix, though the streaming network has not yet announced a specific release date.
