His on-screen character of Sonny Kiriakis has not been able to catch much of a break lately, and life appears to be partially imitating art in Days of Our Lives star Freddie Smith's life as well.

Freddie Smith & Girlfriend Seriously Injured In Car Wreck

Smith, who was involved in a serious car wreck back in October, has now been sentenced to two years of probation and had his driver's license suspended for one year after pleading guilty to for driving under the influence and to felony vehicular assault back in December.

Smith was driving with girlfriend Alyssa Tabit in Kingsville Township, Ohio, on the day the crash, when he lost control of the car and crossed the center line of the road, before the vehicle flipped over.

Smith sustained minor injuries in the crash, but Tabit was seriously injured and flown by medical helicopter to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown.   

In addition to his probation and suspension, Smith was also ordered to pay $1,400 in fines, take a driver's intervention program, and is now slated to speak to students at every Ashtabula County high school about the dangers of drinking and driving.

While he is suffering consequences for the incident, Smith may still be faring better than his character at the moment. On the show, Sonny was recently stabbed in the back (literally) because of an escalating turf war between his uncle and another man. While recovering from his injuries in the hospital, he learned that his husband, Will (Guy Wilson) had cheated on him with his ex-boyfriend, Paul (Christopher Paul).
