Portwood agreed to give Shirley full custody of their young daughter before she entered a five-year prison term in June 2012.

According to a report by Wetpaint Entertainment on Monday, Shirley's plans to retain custody of his daughter aren't the result of her behavior. In fact, he claims she's been doing quite well since her November 2014 release from prison.

"She's doing a lot better, she's not like that anymore,” he said. “I have to say I'm very proud of Amber because of the difference now. I'm not saying she's a bad person, I'm not saying that at all. She was dealing with a lot.”
