Sadly, the one person for whom the song meant the most is the only one who won't be remembering the touching performance. Campbell, who was nominated for the song at the 87th Annual Academy Awards this weekend, was unable to attend due to his advancing Alzheimers.

According to the Daily Mail on Monday, McGraw's performance touched Campbell's family even if the singer himself is no longer capable of recognizing his own music.

I'm Not Gonna Miss You comes from the documentary Glen Campbell, I'll Be Me. The film follows the singer's 2011 farewell tour, which was designed as one final goodbye to the business after 78-year-old Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimers.

"I'm not sure if he's really aware…" said his wife, Kim Campbell, as she walked the red carpet at the Oscars on Sunday. "It's just hard for him to understand."

Though Campbell's song lost out to Glory by John Legend and Common, McGraw's performance served as a touching tribute to Campbell, as well as his wife and children.

"When you have a loved one that has Alzheimers, most family members understand that it's a really sad thing to watch somebody losing their memories," explained Kim during an interview with Rolling Stone back on Oct. 24. "That's what you hope you can spend your later years sharing with someone, your memories. It's not just memories, it's the ability to reason and think. So, you're really losing them bit by bit."

McGraw knew the responsibility he was being handed when asked to perform Campbell's song at the Academy Awards, and many viewers felt he did right by the legend he so admires.
