Gotham star Ben McKenzie recently spoke about The Joker and whether or not the man featured in a recent episode was a young version of the iconic villain.

'Gotham's Joker Storyline Not A 'Bait-and-Switch' For The Audience

A recent episode of Gotham titled The Blind Fortune Teller revealed that a young man named Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) had killed his mother. His appearance and maniacal laugh led many to believe that Jerome might be the first incarnation of the Joker, but it was left open-ended enough for this not to be the case.

McKenzie, who plays Detective Gordon on the Fox series, spoke with E! Online at the Film Independent Spirit Awards last weekend and discussed the Jerome/Joker storyline.

"We had a possible Joker in the last episode, Cameron from Shameless," McKenzie said. "He did a wonderful job. It's one of those things we sort of leave out and see if we come back to it or not. He's possibly going to be the Joker because it's an origins story. We...have a couple of possible people who could be the Joker."

While Jerome isn't necessarily who The Joker would inevitably become, McKenzie suggested that he is not ruling him out as the villain.

"He's just a kid at this point who has killed his own mother, so he's clearly a little disturbed," McKenzie explained. "And he's grown up in the circus so he's got a sense for the theatrical and he has the red hair and the requisite maniacal laugh. He kills it."

It remains to be seen if Jerome will show up again on Gotham but Monaghan certainly made an impression in his one episode.

Gotham airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
