Colin Farrell traded in a bullet-proof vest for a slate gray suit on the set of True Detective this week.

Why Jeff Bridges Might Be The Best Fit For The 3rd Season Of 'True Detective'

Photos of the star filming in Los Angeles were released by the Daily Mail on Feb. 27 and showed the actor smoking a cigarette as he walked outside, his long gray-brown hair slicked back and a rather concerned look printed across his face. Farrell stars in the crime drama this season as Detective Ray Velcoro, a man torn between the criminals who own him and his commitment to uphold the law. So is Ray's dark past finally catching up with him? Or is he just busy trying to solve the case?

Vince Vaughn (career criminal Frank Semyon), Rachel McAdams (Detective Ani Bezzerides), and Taylor Kitsch (officer Paul Woodrugh) are set to star alongside Farrell on the highly anticipated program this year.

Why 'True Detective' Won't Be Killing Off Leading Characters This Season

While the show's first season focused on murder in rural Louisiana, the new installment is set to focus on the death of a corrupt city manager in California. It will focus on the darker aspects of society, as well as various aspects of the Occult.

As with the crime drama's first installment, it looks like much of the new narrative will focus on people struggling to do right despite deep and often damaging personal flaws.

Creator Nic Pizzolatto has written all of the upcoming episodes, with Fast & Furious alum Justin Lin credited with directing for the premiere.

True Detective will return on HBO for a second season mid-2015.
