The first official photo of Joseph Gordon-Levitt portraying Edward Snowden in Academy Award-winning director Oliver Stone's Snowden, which is currently filming is out now.

Snowden is a biographical and political thriller about former Central Intelligence Agency employee Edward Snowden who is a computer professional leaking thousands of classified National Security Agency documents to the press in 2013. Snowden is currently facing a 30-year prison sentence in the United States, but he has been granted temporary asylum in Russia.

In the photo above, Gordon-Levitt embodies Snowden prior to his downfall of leaking classified information.

"In this first look, before he was a whistle-blower, Edward was an ordinary man who unquestioningly served his country," the studio Open Road Films stated in a release.

Snowden is currently filming in Munich, Germany, but will be moving to various other locations around the world soon.

The studio is calling the film an "international thriller". This film is based off two books; The Snowden Files by Luke Harding as well as Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena who happened to be Snowden's Russian lawyer.

The cast also includes Insurgent's leading lady Shailene Woodley as Lindsay Mills (Snowden's girlfriend) and Zachary Quinto who is known for his roles on 24, American Horror Story and Heroes as Glenn Greenwald (the journalist who leaked the classified information that Snowden disclosed).

Others in the cast include Melissa Leo, Timothy Olyphant, Nicolas Cage, Tom Wilkinson, Scott Eastwood, Joely Richardson, Keith Stanfield and Rhys Ifans.

Snowden will release in the United States on Dec. 25.
