The newest season of The Amazing Race has been entirely devoted to dating couples, but one in particular officially took the next step in their relationship and became engaged while racing in Thailand.

Someone Gets Engaged On 'The Amazing Race'

Matt and Ashley, dating hairstylists from Scarsdale, N.Y., arrived at the Pit Stop in Phuket, Thailand in 6th place, directly after several other teams also arrived at the finish line. And now, in an interview with Us Weekly, Matt admits he knew it was the perfect time to do what he had planned to at some point on the race-and officially ask his girlfriend of three years to be his wife.

"Basically, I went with my heart," he said. "When we started the Race, we started off a little rocky. We went to Japan and I said to myself, 'The next leg, the next country that we go to that's absolutely beautiful, I'm gonna figure out where and when I want to do it."

Matt and Ashley Know They May Face Some 'Big Challenges'

However, after he left his fanny pack containing the ring at a theatre where the couple had just completed a challenge, their arrival at the Pit Stop was delayed-and suddenly, Matt's plans changed because he was not going to propose in front of nearly all of their competitors.

"We raced back and I got it and we're racing to the finish line. It just so happened...every single team was at the pit stop when we got there," he said. "I'm freaking out now because we're standing on this mountain, looking at everybody. "

"I'm realizing I'm about to ask her to marry me and there's like 20 cameras on me and my whole body starts shaking," he added. "My nerves just won't calm down and it's getting worse and worse."

However, after Matt brought Ashley out in front of their fellow racers and show host Phil Keoghan, his proposal went off without a hitch, as he dropped to one knee after promising to "always say, 'I love you,' to always kiss her goodnight, and to always admit when she's right."

And according to his fiancée, he has kept all of those promises.

Matt also took to his Twitter page after the couple's proposal aired to clarify that he hadn't revealed his plans to propose to anyone-and that producers were equally as surprised as Ashley was when he pulled out the ring.

The Amazing Race airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on CBS.
