Spartacus alum Lucy Lawless has officially joined the cast of Starz's upcoming Ash vs. Evil Dead series.

The Infamously Murderous Mikael Returns To 'The Originals'

Based on the cult classic 1980s horror franchise, the show will follow Ash (Bruce Campbell) who must reluctantly battle evil in order to save the world. A remake of the original film was made by director Fede Alvarez in 2013, though this project will apparently have no ties to the upcoming series.

According to TVLine on Monday, Lawless will play a woman named Ruby who is determined to stop the rising of the evil dead. Considering the fact that she blames Ash for the nearing apocalypse, fans can expect some heavy conflict between the two as the series unfolds.

Lawless is no stranger to playing tough women on television. From the title role in Xena: Warrior Princess to a strong-willed middle school vice principal who captures Ron Swanson's (Nick Offerman) heart on Parks and Recreation, the actress has quite a bit experience when it comes to being fierce.

Production for the half-hour long series is expected to begin in New Zealand this spring. 1981's Evil Dead director Sam Raimi has co-written the pilot and is also set to direct it.

"Evil Dead has always been a blast," he told TVLine on Nov. 10. "Bruce [Campbell], Rob [Tapert], and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash's lame, heroic saga."

Ash vs. Evil Dead will likely debut on Starz for its first season during the later half of 2015.
