Fans might just learn more about Sir Malcolm's solo exploits this season on Showtime's Penny Dreadful.

Showtime Sets The 'Mood' For Trouble On 'Penny Dreadful' 

While a flashback episode from season one told of Vanessa's (Eva Green) childhood and relationship with the Murray family, it seems that Sir Malcolm's (Timothy Dalton) past may also be explored in the upcoming episodes.

On Tuesday producer Christopher King shared a photo of the Murray family crest, which was recently hung in Sir Malcolm's home.

Vanessa Might Be In For A Bitter Betrayal On 'Penny Dreadful' 

The fact that the crest is "now" hanging in the house suggests that it hadn't been there before, which could have either been an oversight or else part of a makeover given to the mansion in preparation for a flashback scene.

So will Mina Murray (Olivia Llewellyn) return in such flashbacks? Or will Sir Malcolm and Sembene's (Danny Sapani) pastsfinally be revealed? Mina got a ton of backstory before her death during season 1, but Sembene remains one of the show's most mysterious figures. So far he's only existed as Sir Malcolm's right-hand man.

So will he finally get his own voice? Or will flashbacks reveal why he is so loyal to Sir Malcolm? It could go either way, though the latest photo from the set does confirm that viewers will be getting more info on Vanessa's shady benefactor.

Penny Dreadful will return on Showtime for a second season on Sunday, May 4 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
