Jessica Simpson's first choice weight loss method was not Weight Watchers.

Simpson wanted to undergo lap band surgery when she struggled to lose the baby weight after Maxwell's May 1 birth.

After getting two different doctors' opinions, "she was persuaded to keep pushing to do it the natural way," a close friend of Simpson's told RadarOnline

"After having her daughter Maxwell, Jessica felt there was no way she could ever lose the weight on her own because she has struggled so much in the past and her post partum weight seemed to be growing," the RadarOnline source said.

The 32-year-old fashion designer has been losing the 70 pregnancy pounds by exercising with celebrity trainer Harley Pasternack and following the Weight Watchers program, for which she is a spokesperson.

In her Weight Watchers commercials, Simpson says, "There is a lot of pressure to lose weight but I'm not a supermodel. I'm just Jessica trying to eat real food in the real world."

Friends are relieved that Jessica is successfully slimming down on without the aid of surgery. Her pals were afraid her weight woes would cause her to suffer from post partum depression.

"She has had to deal with the blues in the past," the source said. "So everyone was thrilled that she has avoided PPD. With the doctors' words and her friends' encouragement, she is finally shedding the pounds without surgery!"

When she appeared on Katie Couric's show earlier this month, she had lost 40 lbs.

She told Couric, "I've had to really stay focused on my diet and really concentrate on what i'm putting in my body. ... I've lost weight every week, thank God, but I've worked really hard.
