Divergent had a budget of $85 million and grossed far beyond that amount at the box office when it hit theaters last March.

Divergent's mega-success allowed for an increased budget for Insurgent. The sequel got $110 million-plus, but the increase in the budget did not lead to "big exploitation stuff" in terms of special effects and action scenes as Wick put it.

"Our biggest action is showing the inner life of a young woman who's going through a lot of fear. So, the fact that we have giant action sequences that express character and emotion has been a real challenge. We're very aware that the fan base is so attracted to the authenticity of the book. We had to figure out how to dramatize it and how to adapt it for the big screen," Wick said.

Fisher added that when they bought Divergent, "it was an unpublished manuscript" and as they shot it the book kept selling, which allowed for the increase in budget.

"By the time Insurgent came, we'd gone from zero sales to over 30 million. That was a big change in terms of just what the entity had become. And we also had, in terms of the budget, added two new fantastic stars with Naomi Watts and Octavia Spencer," Fisher said.

The couple also dished they have no intentions of altering the ending of the series.

"We're going to embrace it," Wick shared.

Insurgent hits theaters on March 20.
