Bruce Willis' latest flick, "Looper" made an impressive debut in the United States and overseas.

While the sci-fi film landed in the no. 2 spot domestically during its opening weekend, it earned an estimated $21.2 million in ticket sales, according to Bloomberg Business Week, Willis' latest pic also landed no. 1 internationally.

The thriller earned $57.2 million worldwide with most of its ticket sales coming from China.

"Looper" opened no. 1 in China with ticket sales at $24 million, just a few million more than it performed domestically, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The time travel-themed film was topped domestically by Sony's "Hotel Transylvania," which earned $43 million. It performed less than "Looper" overseas, it earned $8.1 million internationally in 13 markets for a global total of $51.1 million. 

Part of the film's success was attributed to the fact that part of its story is set in Asia, in addition to a second version of the film being edited exclusively for the Chinese audience.

The Los Angeles Times reported that two versions of "Looper" were being released. The traditional for a the US market, and a second that is said to be a longer and a more Shanghai-inspired edition.

"Looper" also did well in Russia ($4.5 million), the U.K. ($3.6 million) and Australia ($2.9 million).

"Looper" is about a hit man, played by Jospeh Gordon-Levitt, who is hired by the mafia to kill hit men from the future. A series of events occur when he is ordered to kill his future self played by Bruce Willis.

The film stars Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Emily Blunt. It was the opening film at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.

"Looper" was released on September 28, 2012.
