The future of Twin Peaks has been called into question due to recent comments made by co-creator and director David Lynch.

Will Showtime Leave David Lynch & Company Alone for 'Twin Peaks' in 2016?

Twin Peaks had been announced to be returning to television in 2016 on Showtime, though things are apparently getting a bit "complicated" behind the scenes.

The visionary director spoke at the Between Two Worlds exhibition in Brisbane, Australia over the weekend, casting some doubt on season 3 of Twin Peaks.

David Duchovny Thinks He Will Return As Transgender DEA Agent In New Season of 'Twin Peaks'?

"I haven't returned yet and we're still working on the contract," he admitted to fans at the event, according to Welcome to Twin Peaks. "But I love the world of 'Twin Peaks' and I love those characters. And I think it will be very special to go back into that world."

The director was apparently asked directly if Twin Peaks was "definitely happening," to which Lynch replied "I don't know. There are complications."

While this isn't a particularly good sign, Welcome to Twin Peaks is theorizing that this is an issue of cast contract negotiations. After all, the actors have been free of their parts for the last 24 years and with demand for the series so high, it's possible that some are negotiating for higher pay.

Either way, it has Twin Peaks fans concerned. The series has been scheduled to air its revival season in 2016 on Showtime, though if there are a lot of complications then it may delay the project further down the road.

Lynch obviously wants the project to happen so Twin Peaks fans shouldn't give up hope, but this is an unwanted bump in the road for the return of the beloved cult series.
