The memes that feature him using a variety of pickup lines after saying, "Hey Girl" aren't something actor Ryan Gosling wants to claim as his own original idea.

In fact, the actor has denied ever having anything to do with the popular phrase that is often attributed to him.

"I understand if you're in a movie and you say something like, 'I'll be back,' you own that," he said during a South by South West Festival panel promoting his directorial debut Lost River on March 13. "But I never said it."

The actor has garnered cult followings and online infamy through the memes, which have helped encourage his status as one of the most lusted after actors in Hollywood. The popular internet sensations often feature various photos of Gosling and have a number of different pick-up lines attached to them-and all are prefaced by the infamous "Hey girl."

Some of the most popular memes of the actor include ones which read, "Hey Girl, Feel my sweater. Know what it's made of? Boyfriend material"; "Hey Girl, I get how you spent $300 at Target when we just needed toilet paper. I do that too;" and "Hey girl, I forgot my library card. If I give you my phone number, can you look me up?".

The actor previously addressed the memes while promoting his movie Blue Valentine in 2013, and even joked at the time that he actually was responsible for them.

"They're hilarious," he said at the time.

"Do you say any of these things? DO you want to say any of these things?" his interviewer asked.

"I write them actually," he joked. "It's my site. I didn't feel like I was getting enough."
