American Horror Story star Finn Wittrock recently discussed why he is drawn to so many torture characters in his acting career.

Frances Conroy Unable To Star In 'American Horror Story' Season 5?

Wittrock, who memorably played petulant man-child Dandy Mott on FX's American Horror Story: Freak Show, recently spoke with Out Magazine about his taking of so many complex, emotional roles.

He is particularly drawn to the "outcast" type of role.

"They definitely seem to come to me and I wonder what that says about my personality!" he said. "I'm often tapped for parts that are tortured characters, either physically or emotionally. Maybe people just like to hurt me! I'm definitely drawn to extremes, and to things away from my own personality-places I can push myself further than I have before. Even in Unbroken part of the challenge was to see how physically and emotionally far we could go with it, and how much I could push my own boundaries of what I'd done before. As soon as I see myself repeating my work, I go a little crazy."

Wittrock has been a part of many shows and movies with LGBT themes, including American Horror Story, Showtime's Masters of Sex and Ryan Murphy's TV movie The Normal Heart. The actor praised the loyalty of the gay community and their willingness to follow certain people through their careers.

"Once you break into something like that, they seem to be curious about everything you're doing next," Wittrock explained. "And I think Ryan Murphy has a good following in that community, and lots of the things I'm doing have been riding on his coattails. They're good coattails to be on!"

It is still unknown if Wittrock will return for season 5 of American Horror Story, subtitled Hotel, though Murphy and company would be smart to bring him back considering he was almost unquestionably the breakout actor from Freak Show. As it stands now, season 5 features Lady Gaga, Matt Bomer, Cheyenne Jackson, Wes Bentley and Chloë Sevigny.
