Sherlock season 4 will ultimately be about "consequences," according to series co-creator Steven Moffat.

'Sherlock' Star Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals How He 'Painstakingly' Remembers His Lines

Moffat spoke with Entertainment Weekly in a new interview this week about the fourth season of Sherlock and what fans can expect. Unfortunately, the season hasn't even been written yet but he and fellow co-creator Mark Gatiss know what the overall tone will be.

"The first series was all about the beginning of their friendship. Second about the formative stages, the love and fear and loss and all that. The third was good days, me and my pal and my pal's wife. Those are golden days," Moffat explained.

'Sherlock' Special Taking Place In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Original Victorian Setting

"The missing element in a lot of Sherlock Holmes adaptations is allowing it to be funny. There's a lot of humor in Sherlock Holmes, and it's ignored in a lot of adaptations," he added. "[Season 4] is going to be... I suppose you'd say... consequences. It's consequences. Chickens come to roost. It's dark in some ways-obviously it's great fun and a Sherlock Holmes romp and all that-but there's a sense of... things... coming back to bite you. It's not a safe, sensible way to live. It's hilarious and exhilarating some days, but some days it's going to be bloody frightening."

The fourth season of Sherlock does not have a known premiere date yet, though many are expecting it to premiere in early 2016 to keep with the show's regular schedule. The first season aired in 2010, the second in 2012 and the third in 2014.

However, there is also a holiday special planned before this that is expected to air in late 2015. The special is set in Victorian London, the original location of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories.
