'Vikings' Season 3: Renewed For Season 4, Find Out When Filming Will Resume

Vikings curious monk-turned-warrior met a bloody demise during "Born Again," embracing his Christian fait while leaving behind a son he knows not of. Now that Athelstan (George Blagden) is dead and buried, Blagden has opened up regarding his character's finale moments.

"Once Athelstan has had the epiphany that he has-from that point on, he has that air of knowing that everything will be all right, no matter what," Blagden explained to Entertainment Weekly. "From that point on in the episode, you see Athelstan accepting death, and maybe knowing that it's coming. And when it does arrive, it's like he's already accepted it."

While Athelstan was at peace in his final moments despite Floki's (Gustaf Skarsgard) brutal attack, the English transplant's death is still laced with tragedy - and not just for Ragnar (Travis Fimmel). Athelstan will never meet his son, but little Alfred will grow up to do great things.

"Not only a future King of Wessex, but the future King of England!" series creator Michael Hirst teased, according to Entertainment Weekly. "He is Alfred the Great. And the real Alfred the Great, who was born to Ecbert's son, ended up fighting against Ragnar's sons. So all that's to come!"
