While Michael Sam is succeeding so far on ABC's Dancing With the Stars, he admits that the show is just his "employer" for the time being.

Sam is one of 11 celebs still remaining in Dancing With the Stars, partnered with Peta Murgatroyd. While he has not received the highest scores, he has also successfully stayed above the bottom of the leaderboard enough to be safe and is continuing through the competition.

While Dancing With the Stars has taken over his life now, the openly gay former NFL player told the Star-Telegraph that it is all just temporary.

"Dancing with the Stars is my employer," Sam noted. "That's my main source of income. ... I'm unemployed, and I don't believe I'm out of the NFL because I'm gay. But if it was a reason, it can hurt their livelihood, and you don't want to take that chance."

Sam made headlines in 2014 after becoming the first openly gay person to be drafted in the NFL. He was drafted to the St. Louis Rams but was ultimately cut before the beginning of the regular season. The defensive end said that ultimately all he wants "is to be a football player."

Spring seasons of Dancing With the Stars have always lasted until the end of May, so if Sam continues to improve and stays in the competition, he should be very busy through the spring. There is no word on how this may impact his NFL prospects.

Dancing With the Stars airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
