As fans prepare to say good-bye to Downton Abbey, it appears that their hearts may heal just a little after hearing this news.

Everything Is 'Finite' On 'Downton Abbey'

On Saturday, The Hollywood Reporter mentioned that even though the British drama is set to air its final season, there's a possibility that one of the characters might pull off a spin-off in a new TV series.

Creator Julian Fellowes has been working on a show called The Gilded Age, an NBC drama set in the late 19th century. As it turns out, the Dowager (Maggie Smith) from Downton could potentially make an appearance on the show during a different age in her life.

Is Maggie Smith Quitting 'Downton Abbey?'

"Robert [Crawley] would be in his early teens, Cora would be a child. A young Violet could make an appearance," Fellowes told Daily Mail.

Even though this is only a consideration, fans would probably be happy to see what the Dowager would be like during her younger years. And if her character does well on Gilded, then perhaps she might make this show worth a watch.

Fellowes noted that he has plenty of confidence that this new series could become a pretty big hit.

"There's always an assumption that it's impossible to make lightning strike twice in the same place," he said. "But I'm looking forward to it, and I think it'll be quite different."

Downton Abbey Season 6 is expected to air in the United States in January 2016 on PBS.
