5. Playing House - USA Network
Season 2 premieres Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 10 p.m.

This USA comedy starring Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair is one of the best shows depicting female friendship on television. With a great cast of actors and guest stars that includes Keegan-Michael Key, Zach Woods, Brad Morris, Jane Kaczmarek and Marissa Jaret Winokur, this comedy is one of the most underrated shows out there. Watch the first season on Hulu through connecting to your TV provider.

4. Masters of Sex - Showtime
Season 3 premieres Sunday, July 12 at 10 p.m.

Lizzy Caplan and Michael Sheen star as famed sex researchers Virginia Johnson and Bill Masters. Taking place in the '50s and '60s, Masters of Sex is a good substitute for AMC's slow burn drama Mad Men. The show depicts how people interact with and love each other, especially in the repressed era of the '50s. Watch the first two seasons on Showtime Anytime. The first season is also available on DVD.

3. True Detective - HBO
Season 2 premieres Sunday, June 21

True Detective took the world by storm early last year with bravura performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as a pair of mismatched and complicated detectives. Season 2 features an all new cast and location with Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch. While fans don't necessarily have to catch up on season 1 beforehand, it would help to get a taste for the overall feel of the show. Stream season 1 on HBO Go, HBO Now or watch it on DVD.

2. Hannibal - NBC
Season 3 premieres Thursday, June 4 at 10 p.m.

One of the most horrifying shows on television is also one of the most beautiful. Hannibal stars Hugh Dancy as criminal profiler Will Graham and Mads Mikkelsen as the titular serial killer Hannibal Lecter. The relationship between Graham and Hannibal is one of the most unique on television, and the show's writers and directors know how to create a truly haunting image. Not for the faint of heart. The first two seasons are currently out on DVD.

1. Orange Is the New Black - Netflix
Season 3 premieres Friday, June 12 at midnight

Orange Is the New Black is one of the most consistently entertaining shows on the air, with a crazy cast of characters. Equal parts comedy and drama, the Netflix prison "dramedy" has everything. Taylor Schilling stars as Piper, a new inmate at a womens' prison. The show then opens up to explore more of the prisoners and their complicated backstories.
