The Blacklist's Raymond 'Red' Reddington will be out of commission when the NBC series returns on April 23.

The ever-vigilant master of mystery took a bullet during "Vanessa Cruz," and Red (James Spader) won't undergo a miraculous recovery over the three-week hiatus.

"We pick up immediately, in the moments of the shooting. Dembe was being shot at, and Red's bleeding on the ground, clearly wounded in a horrible way," series creator Jon Bokenkamp told TV Line in regards to "Leonard Caul." "[Red's condition] creates a void, and Liz is going to have to step up and fill the space that is occupied by Red and work through this situation."

While Liz's (Megan Boone) dubious mentor fights for his life, Liz will have to continue Red's quest to unravel the mystery of the Fulcrum. The profiler will enlist Tom's (Ryan Eggold) help once more as she seeks to track down Nathan Caul. It is currently unknown how Nathan folds into the picture but there is a good chance he is a descendent of the title blacklister, a man who knows of the Fulcrum from a long-past connection to Red.
