Katie Holmes enjoyed some alone time as she went for a walk on the New York City streets this week, and she ran into a famous friend - actor Ethan Hawke.

Holmes was casually sauntering down the block when she randomly happened upon Hawke, who was sitting on the stoop of his apartment building with his one-year-old daughter Indiana and his dog.

Holmes took a few minutes to chat with Hawke as she stopped at his stoop and talked with him from the bottom of the stairs.

Holmes was make-up free, and the 33-year-old actress looked casual in an oversized white knit sweater, jeans and brown leather boots.

She's also been busy with her 6-year-old daughter Suri, who just last month started school at the Avenues academy in Chelsea. The brand new facility is just blocks from Holmes' apartment building in the same neighborhood and boasts a rooftop playground and a gym with volleyball and basketball courts.

Suri's schooling carries quite the price tag. Tuition for the prestigious Avenues academy runs at $39,750 per year.

Holmes and Suri have lived in New York City since Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise over the summer and left Los Angeles. New court documents from the divorce proceedings revealed the marriage had "broken down irretrievably" at least six months before the separation.
