Thursday night The Vampire Diaries returned from its mini hiatus with a brand new episode called I Could Never Love Like That, which delved quite a bit into Enzo's (Michael Malarkey) backstory.

Find Out Some Insight About Nina Dobrev's Upcoming Departure From 'The Vampire Diaries'

Viewers of the supernatural series finally know how Enzo became a vampire and it all ties to Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan's (Paul Wesley) mother Lily (Annie Wersching).

Lily is the vampire that turned Enzo. She promised him a fresh start with quite a few companions, but ultimately abandoned him since the Gemini coven banished her to the 1903 prison world.

'The Vampire Diaries' Season 6 Wrapped With Nina Dobrev & Michael Trevino Saying Goodbye

On Wednesday, Malarkey revealed to The Hollywood Reporter some insight on what is to come for Enzo now that there is this deeper knowledge of him that has surfaced.

Malarkey's character had a rough past and was seeing Lily as a maternal figure, but when he awoke as a new vampire, he was left alone so Malarkey said he would be confronting Lily about what happened back in 1903 on that passenger ship heading to New York.

"The relationship they do develop when he finds out the truth of what happens is more of a kinship as opposed to a maternal thing. I wouldn't say straight away there's a romance [angle], but I think we've left the door open for it to go any which way. There's definitely a chemistry there that is deep-rooted," Malarkey divulged.

Damon is one of Enzo's only friends so it is a bit bizarre and shocking to learn that Damon's mother is the one responsible for turning Enzo, which Malarkey said will obviously have some effect on the present-day relationship between Enzo and Lily.

"We haven't really had a chance to explore that too deeply. I think Damon's pretty shocked as it is. But I think that will be one of the storylines we explore in Season 7," he shared.

Malarkey dished that Enzo would be facing his "trust issues" and "all of these deep-rooted feelings of loss" since Lily is now in the present.

The close of this current sixth season will show "how strong" of a connection there is between Enzo and Lily.

"Enzo is still an outsider," Malarkey added, but stated that there's "an interesting dynamic now with this strange triangle between him, the Salvatore brothers, and Lily, and the different pulls that are happening to him because of it."
