With the fate of ABC's Castle still up in the air, show creator Andrew W. Marlowe speaks on the upcoming season 7 finale and whether it will be satisfying for fans.

Future Looking Good As Nathan Fillion Signs On For More 'Castle'

Castle as a series has been in limbo through much of the seventh season, with stars Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic not signing contracts beyond the end of season 7. Luckily Fillion officially signed a contract last week, though Katic's is still up in the air.

It is not yet known if ABC will decide to cancel the series if Katic does not come back, but Marlowe and company wrote the season 7 finale with both potential fates in mind.

"Writing a season finale, not knowing if the show is coming back, is always a challenge," Marlowe explained to TVGuide.com this week. "[We] were looking for something where we could craft a story that if for some reason it ended up being the last Castle, we have some sense of conclusion. But the show also opens up a lot of avenues of storytelling with some of the dilemmas within the character as we head out of the season."

Marlowe believes that their goals have been met as far as storytelling for season 7, though he still thinks there's a lot of potential story to go if they get the green light for season 8.

"I wouldn't call [the finale] a traditional cliff-hanger, but there are very specific unresolved issues about our characters that will allow us a fascinating springboard into a next season," he teased. "We have more important stuff to get to if we're allowed to get there. If we don't, I think the characters have arrived at a really interesting point."

With renewals, cancellations and new schedules usually occurring in May, the clock is ticking on Castle. It may just come down to the wire as the show reaches its finale.

Castle airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
