It seemed the heat between Katy Perry and John Mayer had cooled in recent weeks, but the couple was back on as they enjoyed a date night together in New York City this week.

The couple went out on the town for dinner, but it wasn't just a regular meal - they were celebrating Mayer's 35th birthday.

Photographers caught Mayer and Perry as they exited their hotel and headed out into the New York City streets on the way to dinner, and while they kept close to one another, they didn't show much emotion for the cameras.

The typically outlandishly dressed Perry looked sleek and demure as she rocked her natural-colored dark hair in loose waves. She wore a floral dress with an oriental vibe under a classic grey coat and accessorized with bright yellow heels and handbag.

Mayer looked casual in baggy trousers, a white button-up shirt and denim jacket, but he spiced up the look a bit by topping it off with a navy blue bow tie.

The dinner date this week was one of the first times Mayer and Perry have been spotted in public together in the last few days. They began dating this summer, and the relationship heated up quickly, but the relationship ended about as fast as it began.

Some speculation claims that was because Perry's friends don't like Mayer and think he's bad for the "Firework" singer.

"Katy's inner circle was anti-Russell and thought she'd learned her lesson about bad boys," said a source close to Perry. "They flipped out after hearing she's crazy about John - they think he's far worse than Russell!"

But after weeks apart, it seems the relationship is back on in full force. The couple also had a celebratory birthday lunch earlier in the day before stepping out for dinner.
