The release of the new tablet from Microsoft already has delays.

The Microsoft Surface, a tablet with a detachable keyboard, has been on consumers' minds since it was announced in June.

Pre-orders have already begun for the tablet that hits stores on Oct. 26.

The price will start at $499 for a 32GB version. Other more expensive tablets are available with a 32GB version bundled with a black touch cover for $599 and the 64GB version with the black cover for $699. Consumers can purchase the touch covers separately in black, white, magenta, cyan and red for the price of $119.99. There's also the option of a type cover in black with moveable keys priced at $129.99.

It appears that consumers are starting to jump on the new tablet. According to the Microsoft Store, the shipments for the base model have been set back to "within 3 weeks," but the more expensive models still have their delivery set for Oct. 26.

Microsoft held a media event in Redmond, Wash. this week where they showcased the new tablet.

"We knew we wanted to design a complete computing experience," said Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division, at the event. "So we designed all of the elements of the hardware and software together."

Surface weighs in at 1.5 pounds with a 10.6-inch screen, compared to Apple's iPad at 10.1-inch.The new tablet will reportedly also have a battery that lasts all day, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and front and rear facing 720p HD cameras.

Panos Panay, general manager for Surface products at Microsoft, said the design was made to be a light weight multitasking device.

"When you set your hands down in the keyboard position you can get a perfect typing experience," said Panay.
