'Castle' Boss Says Finale Was 'Challenging' To Write Amid Renewal Buzz

Jon Huertas, who plays Javier Esposito on the crime procedural, recently spoke with CBS News about the future of the show and what's ahead for the season 7 finale.

Asked if the series will be renewed for season 8, Huertas seemed relatively positive.

"I know the studio and the network -- I think they're into it," he said. "They already closed Nathan's [Fillion] deal. And all our contracts are up."

This month, Fillion signed the deal to continue beyond season 7. Meanwhile, Stana Katic, who plays Beckett on the series has reportedly yet to sign a deal to continue. With big renewal and cancellations decisions made in May, the clock is ticking.

For the time being, Huertas shared that the finale will delve into Castle's backstory.

"I think the most important thing is --- we're going to find out at the end of the season is a little bit more about Nathan Fillion's character, Castle, and what drove him to become the man that he is -- go back to Richard's childhood and find out what made the man. And what caused him to become a crime novelist," Huertas explained.

As for his own character, Esposito, he said that his and Castle's relationship will be explored in terms of trust.

"I think that my character is always first and foremost trying to be a great detective...And the thing is about Castle -- he always has a suspicion of him because Castle has done some things that were questionable as far as his disappearance -- that didn't back up. Finally, he gets to know Castle and who he really is," Huertas teased. "It gives him solace into letting this guy complete[ly] into his life."

ABC has yet to make a decision on whether or not to renew Castle.

Castle airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
