Michael Douglas has a message and this time around it has nothing to do with his Hollywood work. The outspoken actor opened up about the dangers of nuclear weapons, calling them "no less important today" than it was during his childhood.

According to UT San Diego on Wednesday, Douglas made a speech at the United Nations to discuss a new landmark treat on disarmament.

He said, "One of the greatest ironies is that the cost of maintaining the world's nuclear weapons stockpile is surpassed only by the human and environmental costs of using them."

He added, "There may be fewer nuclear weapons these days, but they are more powerful and more sophisticated than ever before."

Meanwhile, in a new interview with ABC News on Friday, Douglas says that he feels "lucky" to be acting in physically-demanding roles again after he lost nearly 40 pounds back in 2010 after he was diagnosed with throat cancer.

He said, "I was so lucky right after the cancer battle to have the 'Behind the Candelbra' experience, which was such a great package, great script, Soderbergh directing, Matt Damon. Combined with the fact that you know you've dodged a bullet."

He added, "I have a resurgence of energy and new appreciation for the work. I love what I'm doing."

Douglas has been married to Catherine Zeta-Jones since 2000. The couple have two children, Dylan and Carys.
