It is still hard to believe The Vampire Diaries is losing Nina Dobrev once the current season's finale airs.

Dobrev has been on the series since its inception, taking on the role of the lead female character Elena and some of her doppelgangers along the way.

It was just last month that the 26-year-old released a long, heart-felt Instagram post enlightening fans on the news of her departure from the series, which creator Julie Plec backed completely.

Is Nina Dobrev Upset That Her 'The Vampire Diaries' Costar Is A Married Man?

Plec spoke with The Spin-Off podcast from KCRW last week, in which she revealed she actually tried to change Dobrev's mind about parting ways with the series.

"She was just looking forward to moving on with no hard feelings and no drama," Plec shared, adding, "This is taking the personal out of it completely, from a storytelling point of view, it's a great challenge. As writers in the room we're finding it very rejuvenating. Just on a strictly creative exercise level."

In the episode that just aired on Thursday of TVD, Dobrev's character took the cure to become human again, which is partly how Elena's storyline will be ended.

"Nina had said earlier this year that she wanted to be done and we spent a little bit of time trying to talk her out of it. [We'd say,] 'Oh, look at all these great plans of how you can stay!'" she detailed.

"And she finally was like, 'No, I signed up for six years. I've done my six years. I'm ready to move on and spread my wings,'" Plec explained.

Plec wanted the fans to know before the season finale, Dobrev's plans since "there's grief attached" when taking away a character that has been around from the beginning.
